There are many professionals who help dyslexic students. Some work within schools. Others work in their own offices and see students privately.

  • School psychologists are trained to diag nose learning problems, including dyslexia. They also know about tutoring programs that are available outside of school. They consult with teachers and offer counseling to students.
  • Clinical psychologists work with dyslexic students who have serious social and behavioral problems in school.
  • Diagnosticians are experts who try to identify the specific learning problems of each dyslexic student.
  • Physical therapists treat physical prob lems that a dyslexic may have. These include disorders of muscles, bones, and nerves.
  • Psychiatrists deal with special problems that a dyslexic may have. The problems include attention deficit disorder (ADD) and hyperactivity.
  • Social workers work with dyslexics and their families. They help them cope with problems that arise at home.
  • Occupational therapists focus on job training skills for dyslexic students.

If you're dyslexic, you may not need the help of all the types of professionals mentioned here. Each dyslexic has different needs. But it is good to know that many types of professionals are available.
