Teenage DepressionWhat Makes Teenage Depression Different?

Adolescence can be a particularly difficult period. Teens are in the midst of attempting to establish an identity independent of their families. Teens also experience major hormonal changes, often prompting emotional highs and lower lows. Any and all of these factors can lead to deep emotional reactions. Other prominent teen stresses include identity issues, struggles among peer groups, and establishing sexual identity.

Teenagers who suffer from depression often act out instead of acting sad. Their behavior may be wild and angry. They don't seem to care what happens to them or anyone else. Getting into trouble at home, at school, or with the law may be their way of showing that they have problems.

Many times, adults don't look at depressed teenagers as children who need help. They see them as juvenile delinquents who should be punished.
