Types of Depressants
Alcoholism
Some warning signs of alcoholism include:
- Preoccupation with alcohol, only taking part in activities including alcohol
- Need for a drink to relax or get to sleep
- Increase of tolerance to the point of not appearing drunk even after drinking a lot of alcohol
- Loss of control over drinking, inability to stop after one drink
- Solitary drinking
- Blackouts, not remembering what happened after drinking
An alcoholic who suddenly stops drinking also suffers severe withdrawal symptoms. It's important to consult with a doctor to see if medical help is necessary to quit. The severe symptoms generally last only a few days, although discomfort can last for many weeks.
While it is possible to use depressant drugs in a safe, responsible way, you need to be aware of the effects of abuse and addiction. Addiction to barbiturates, benzodiazepines, or alcohol is extremely dangerous. If you are addicted and you try to stop without medical help, you may die.
