Why People Abuse Stimulants
Depression
You probably have felt down in the dumps or blue at different times in your life. It's normal to feel this way once in a while. You may have broken up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, or lost a big game. Usually the hurt passes and life goes on.
But what if the feeling just doesn't go away? You may not want to eat or even get out of bed. You may have trouble concentrating and feel hopeless most of the time.
Depression is a common psychological disorder that can be treated. The best way to get help is to approach a counselor at school or tell your parents. Sometimes it helps to talk to a therapist about your feelings. If you find you need additional help, there are several medications that a doctor or psychiatrist can prescribe for you.
You never should use amphetamines or other stimulants in order to treat depression yourself. They can only make your symptoms worse, because every high is followed by a crash. If you and your doctor decide to treat your depression with medication, many different kinds of medication can help. Work with your doctor to find which one is best for you.
One of the best things you can do is talk about your feelings and what's going on in your life with someone who will listen. Find someone close to you whom you can trust.
