Why People Abuse Stimulants
Loneliness
Carlos and Mike had been best friends ever since Carlos could remember. They did everything together: biked in the park, played baseball, rode the school bus. They even played on the same soccer team. So when Mike said that he and his family were moving across the country, Carlos became upset. Who would he hang out with?
Carlos started spending a lot of time alone. He didn't want to do much of anything. Even soccer, which he used to love, didn't seem to be as much fun anymore. One day after practice, a teammate approached Carlos and asked him if something was wrong.
“School, soccer, you know,” Carlos said.
“I know what can make you feel better. And it'll make you move faster on the field, too.”
Carlos was curious. “What is it?”
His teammate reached into his gym bag and pulled out some pills. He handed them to Carlos. “Take these. You'll feel better. Really soon, too.”
Carlos thanked him. His best friend was far away, soccer wasn't going so well, and he felt alone. He would try anything to get over this rough time.
